Ethics for Underwater Photographers

Conservation / Gill Matters

To all our Divers and all our avid photographers,
While it’s everyone’s wish to have that perfect dive or to capture that perfect moment,
There’s much controversy abt how we get that,
There’s many esteemed and prestige u/w photographers out there that have inspired many land loving guys into our loving sport called Scuba diving.
But questions uncontrollably comes to or mind on how did he manage to get such a shot,
Other then fantastic cameras, lens and strobes that come into play,
What really gets to me is the opportunity, the opportunity of the fantastic marine animal posing for the perfect shot,
We know a lot of our Pro photo guys spent tons on time in the water just waiting for the moment and i salute them for that, but how abt the other guys,
My buddy has an photo blog and this topic came up just a while ago and it really sent me into thinking, his site (http://www.deichmann-photo.com/blog.html)

Just check these out,

    Hi Gill Divers,

Just to share a recent experience along the line..This year, I went for a dive in malaysia. First dive,I tired to bring a camera down and I would say, it’s troublesome (first time bring camera down too).. the good thing is, our DM noticed it and when we surfaced, she reminded everyone that pictures comes second (to our lives n the the lives of those living in the water).. Even better, she was always minful of what everyone was doing. When she noticed anyone trying to handle any animal for picture purposes, or even so just chasing a fish irrationally for a picture, she started tanking non stop, until that person stops… she even warned of aborting the dive immediately if she found any action that was life threatening to the aniamls, and us of course. I just thought, she’s got it right, and her message at least, got into my brains.. :)
